LOCKHEED SHUTTLE PROCESSING CONTRACT EXTENDED FOR 3 YEARS

NASA's John F. Kennedy Space Center, Fla., has extended for
3 years its Shuttle processing contract with Lockheed Space
Operations Co., Titusville, Fla. The current contract expires
Sept. 30, 1989.

The 3-year extension, through Sept. 30, 1992, is valued at
$1,606,915,508.

The original contract was awarded Sept. 23, 1983, and
provided for a 3-year period of performance and four 3-year
options. The current extension represents exercise of the second
of these options. The present contract value for the 6-year
period since the contract was competitively awarded in 1983 is
$4,379,631,593.

The contract includes responsibility for operations at
Kennedy Space Center and a small facility maintenance activity at
Vandenberg AFB, Calif.

The KSC portion of the contract extension will be performed
under a cost-plus-award-fee arrangement. Responsibilities
include complete Shuttle processing services involving
preparation of the Shuttle vehicle for each unique mission and
checkout, launch, landing and recovery operations. Lockheed also
is responsible for operation and maintenance of related
processing facilities and ground services at KSC.

The Vandenberg AFB portion of the contract extension is for
1 year only and will be performed under a cost-plus-fixed-fee
arrangement valued at $5,615,000, which will be reimbursed to
NASA by the Air Force. Lockheed's responsibilities at Vandenberg
are to preserve the deactivated Shuttle systems for potential
use.
