[net.unix-wizards] UNIX agreements at universitys

mzal@phoenix.UUCP (Mike Zaleski) (01/10/85)

A recent entry i unix-wizards questioned whether UNIX could be
a trade secret after being used at so many universitys. Well,
when I was an undergrad at Columbia University in 1980, we had
a course where we used the UNIX system to do a couple of things
(including a device driver). We had to sign a non disclosure
agreement of some sort as part of the class. So, in principle,
it is possible to attempt to satisfy the notion of "trade secret"
and still use all sorts of UNIX stuff.

(Try making the agreement stick, you may say? I bet AT&T has a
legal staff ready to do just that.)
