yee@trident.arc.nasa.gov (Peter E. Yee) (10/21/89)

KENNEDY SPACE CENTER SHUTTLE STATUS - FRIDAY, OCTOBER 20, 1989

                              STS-34 - LAUNCH PAD 39-B

MLP-1 is being transferred from the pad to the park site
today. Galileo platforms and equipment have been removed from the
pad. Preparations are underway to turn the pad around to support
the shuttle Discovery for Mission STS-33.

Yesterday, the solid rocket boosters were mounted on stands
at Hangar AF at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station. Today, workers
were to safe and remove ordnance devices. This weekend, the
thermal protective insulation material is scheduled to be removed
in preparation for hydrolasing activities next week. High
pressure water will strip the boosters of the foam and cork
closeout material to allow segment separation. The segments will
be shipped, by rail, to Morton Thiokol for refurbishment.

                          STS-33 - DISCOVERY (OV 103) - VAB

A flight high pressure oxidizer turbo pump is being
connected to the number 3 main engine this weekend. In addition,
Rocketdyne technicians will be reattaching the number 2 engine
nozzle. The seal between the nozzle and main combustion chamber
was replaced last week however, the sealant applied didn't cure
properly. Consequently, the nozzle was lowered and new sealant
was applied. Rollout of Discovery to Pad 39-B is scheduled for
          12:01 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 25.

                       STS-32 - COLUMBIA (OV 102) - OPF BAY 2

Checkout of the remote manipulator arm is underway today.
Flight preparations are continuing on the power reactant storage
and distribution system (PRSD). A total of five PRSD tank sets
have been installed in Columbia to support a longer mission.
Servicing of the freon coolant loop is scheduled today. The
orbiter was serviced with potable water. A crew equipment
interface test is planned for Sunday. Astronauts will inspect the
orbiter's crew cabin and payload bay for familiarity, mission
unique configurations and identify any changes.

STS-32 SOLID ROCKET BOOSTERS - VAB

The right forward center segment was pinned to the stack
today and the right forward segment is scheduled to be
transferred to the VAB today in preparation for stacking.
