[sci.space.shuttle] Galileo question

grazier@maxwell.physics.purdue.edu (Kevin R. Grazier) (11/17/89)

I've seen mention in this newsgroup and elsewhere about Galileo's
VEEGA trajectory. What, exactly, does VEEGA mean?

The only thing I can come up with is Venus/Earth/Earth Gravity Assist.
Is that close? Anybody know?

Yes that is exactly what VEEGA stands for -- Venus/Earth/Earth Gravity
Assist. The Galileo probe is using this complex trajectory to assist it
towards Jupiter instead of using more fuel/energy for a direct flight to
the Jovian planet.
