I think that people have missed mentioning one of the more
obvious reasons for having EVA suit's on this mission. They
are recovering the LDEF and this could very well require at
least one astronaut to make sure the LDEF is properly
positioned in its cradle.
Since there seems to be no one from my school posting here,
I will post the following:
For people who have followed the space program for a long time,
the name George M. Low should be familiar. He headed the Apollo
project and worked elsewhere in NASA. After that he left NASA
and became the 14th President of Rensselaer Polytechnic
Institute. He remained at this post until his death in 1984.
(A year before I got here unfortunately. He was well liked.)
Anyway, to make a long story short, his son is a mission
specialist on the upcoming flight. Among the items he is
carrying, is a chip created here at RPI. The computer chip
contains the name of students, faculty, noted alumns, and a few
others. So, as for this mission, it will mean even more to me
knowing that *I* may not get up there, but at least my name will
make it!
