Ed Campion Headquarters, Washington, D.C. January 3, 1990 Lisa Malone Kennedy Space Center, Fla. LAUNCH ADVISORY: STS-32 SPACE SHUTTLE MISSION NASA managers today set Jan. 8, 1990 as the official target launch date for Shuttle mission STS-32. The primary objectives of this flight are deployment of the Syncom IV-5 communications satellite and retrieval of the Long Duration Exposure Facility (LDEF) using the orbiter Columbia. In addition, as a 10-day flight, it is the first in a series of missions to extend the flight duration of the orbiter. The launch window on Jan. 8 will open at approximately 8:10 a.m. EST and is 58 minutes in length. The exact launch time will be determined 12 hours prior to launch based on the latest data on the location of LDEF. Should launch take place on Jan. 8, landing would be on Jan. 18 at 5:23 a.m. EST at Dryden Flight Research Facility, Edwards, Calif. At the present time no issues are being worked which would be a constraint to launch on Jan. 8.
