[sci.space.shuttle] Has SEEDS had earlier flights?

thomas@mvac23.UUCP (Thomas Lapp) (01/17/90)

I just got off the telephone with a 'garden editor' at the local newspaper.
Two weeks ago, she wrote in her weekly column that she has received
tomato seeds which have been in space (as well as a control set). Although
she said that they were from packets being distributed to school students,
I believe she is getting mixed up (she reported that they came from a
mission back in November, which we all know was the DoD mission).

Does anyone know if the company which sponsors the SEEDS experiment in
LDEF has sent up tomato seeds in a prior experiment (ie. a getaway
special that just sat in the cargo bay during an earlier flight)?

She really insists that the seeds that she received did come from space.
(Of course, the other possibility is that she received the control seeds
already, but has not received the LDEF seeds yet...).

Oh, well. She is the 'garden editor' and I guess can be excused for not
having her space related details straight. Besides, from the picture that
is published with he article, she looks to have been a gardner for quite
some years....
