I recently bought this album on the strength of a video on the MTV station. Shortly after I came across a couple of reviews from Rolling Stone and Stereo Review which were quite complimentary. Rolling Stone gave it, I believe, a 3 1/2 star rating out of 5. Stereo Review was far more generous, giving a best of the month. Based mainly on horns, rhythm guitar and percussion, Haircut 100 comes across as an English version of disco, raggae and jazz. The opening cut "Love plus One" (which is also the video I saw) is really an infectious pop tune, well written and played. Whenever saxophonist Phil Smith jumps in be ready for some real nice listening. Otherwise, the rest of the album comes off too Donna Summerish for me. Not the lyrics mind you, but the music. I keep trying to like this album, but everytime I listen to it with the headphones on I keep expecting to see John Travolta burst into my living room in full disco regalia. Like I said before, the sax is great and so are the lyrics, but I'm glad I only paid $4.77 for it. Tim Connolly BTL INDPLS. inuxa!tconn
