KSC SHUTTLE STATUS - THURSDAY JULY 5, 1990 11 a.m.
STS-38 - ATLANTIS (OV 104) - LAUNCH PAD 39-A
Today, a liquid leak check of auxiliary power units 1 and 2
are planned to verify there are no internal seal leaks. Engineers
are putting requirements together for another tanking test at the
pad as troubleshooting of the hydrogen leak continues. The test
will likely occur mid-next week. Meanwhile, tests are planned to
obtain additional signatures from the two leak detectors mounted
exterior of the orbiter-to-external tank disconnect. The con-
figuration of the vehicle will be maintained until further direc-
tion from the team investigating the leak.
STS-35 - COLUMBIA (OV 102) - OPF BAY 2
The new 17-inch disconnect from the Shuttle Endeavour was
installed on Columbia Tuesday evening and closeout operations
such as foaming around the disconnect are underway. Leak checks
are planned. A cold flow test of the two disconnects and seals
used in the STS-35 tanking test is planned late Friday or Satur-
day at the Rockwell plant in Downey, Calif.
STS-41 - DISCOVERY (OV 103) - OPF BAY 1
All three shuttle main engines have been installed and
hookups and leak checks are underway. Repairs to Discovery's
right payload bay door are continuing. Tests of the orbiter's
systems are continuing today. Thermal protection system opera-
tions are underway on all areas of the vehicle.
Tests are continuing on the two orbital maneuvering system
pods at the Hypergolic Maintenance Facility. About 50 tiles were
removed from the right pod after a small oxidizer leak last
month. Replacement of the tiles is underway in parallel with
other testing. Discovery is being prepared for the STS-41/Ulysses
flight, scheduled for launch in October.
STS-41 SOLID ROCKET BOOSTERS - VAB
The right forward center segment is being transferred to the
Vehicle Assembly Building today for mate to the stack in the next
few days. Closeout operations of the boosters are scheduled.
