[sci.space.shuttle] Shuttle Status for 07/11/90

yee@trident.arc.nasa.gov (Peter E. Yee) (07/16/90)

                KSC SHUTTLE STATUS - WEDNESDAY JULY 11, 1990 10 a.m.

                    STS-38 - ATLANTIS (OV 104) - LAUNCH PAD 39-A

Technicians are continuing to set up special instrumentation
for the liquid hydrogen tanking test planned on Friday. This test
will be another attempt to isolate the source of the leak. Today,
leak detector systems are being calibrated and leak checks of
special baggies around the 17 and 4 inch disconnects are planned.
Initial inspections of the aft compartment are beginning today.
Doors are scheduled to be installed on the aft compartment tomor-
row in preparation for the test.

The call-to-stations for the test remains targeted for 7
a.m. Thursday and the Rotating Service Structure will be moved
away from the vehicle at 11 p.m. that night. Chilldown of the
liquid hydrogen lines is targeted for 7 a.m. Friday with slow
          fill occurring shortly afterwards.

                       STS-35 - COLUMBIA (OV 102) - OPF BAY 2

Measurements of the 17-inch disconnect are planned tomorrow
by the vendor. Replacement of the 4-inch recirculation line on
the STS-35 tank is underway. After several tanking operations,
the integrity of the exterior thermal foam on the line was
suspect. The concern is that some of the foam could break away at
liftoff and damage the orbiter's tiles.

                       STS-41 - DISCOVERY (OV 103) - OPF BAY 1

Tests of the orbiter's systems are continuing today. Tech-
nicians are scheduled to begin installing heat shields around the
three main engines today. Leak checks of the engines have been
completed. The nose cap is scheduled to be removed tonight for
routine inspections. Thermal protection system operations are un-
derway on all areas of the vehicle.

Tests and thruster replacements are continuing on the two
orbital maneuvering system pods and forward reaction control sys-
tem at the Hypergolic Maintenance Facility. Discovery is being
prepared for the STS-41/Ulysses flight, scheduled for launch in
          October.

STS-41 SOLID ROCKET BOOSTERS - VAB

The right forward segment has been stacked and closeout
operations of the boosters are underway.
