                 KSC SHUTTLE STATUS - MONDAY JULY 23, 1990 10 a.m.

                    STS-38 - ATLANTIS (OV 104) - LAUNCH PAD 39-A

Preparations for the third liquid hydrogen tanking test are
underway at the pad today. The call-to-stations for the test is
planned for 7 a.m. tomorrow, chilldown of the plumbing involved
in loading the tank begins at 7 a.m. Wednesday and loading of
liquid hydrogen into the tank begins shortly afterwards.

A baggie has been reinstalled over the tank flange and foam-
ing operations are underway. Sense lines and instrumentation is
being set up for Wednesday's test. Closeouts of the aft compart-
ment for the test are continuing.

Friday, the bolts around the external tank liquid hydrogen
flange were over torqued by 10 percent in an effort to stop the
leak. No imperfections were detected in the external tank flange
welds during the dye penetrant test Friday night.

In parallel with the tank operation, the new number 3
auxiliary power unit was reinstalled this weekend.

mated to the orbiter. Installation activities are continuing
today. The forward reaction control system is scheduled to arrive
at the OPF this afternoon for installation this week. Checks of
the RTG system are continuing. Thermal protection system opera-
tions are underway on all areas of the vehicle. Pre-flight tests
are continuing on the other systems.
