[sci.space.shuttle] Space Academy

petej@phred.UUCP (Pete Jarvis) (08/02/90)

A group of us, The Enterprise Team, is designing a Space Academy II session
for the Space Camp down in Huntsville Alabama. This will be a 1 week session
from noon Saturday through late the following Saturday (Nov. 10-17). Course
subjects are being drawn up using NASA documents. We will train all week
ending in a long Shuttle mission simulation lasting 24-30 hours. There will
be 5 groups of 5. Each group would have 2 pilots and 3 mission specialists.
Each 5-person team flies a 2 hour practice mission and takes a share ofthe
extended sim. There is extensive SCUBA time for mission specialists, water
survival for pilots. Everyone will get a good overview of Shuttle systems
taught from NASA documents. Pilots will also get training on how to control
those systems from the cockpit. Mission specialists will get science and
engineering training that relates to their EVA's and Space Station experiments.
MS's will also design an experiment for their flight. The long sim will take
everything you have learned and force you to synthesize the data and implement
procedures in order to succeed in the mission. It's still in the planning
stages, but that is basically what we will be doing. If anyone is interested
in doing this, there are still slots open. Rich Kolker and Mike Lans are
spearheading this. For an application and other details write Rich Kolker at:

P.S.- Those of us who have reserved a spot, sent a check for $607.50 made
payable to The Space and Rocket Center. It won't cost more, but if it is
less, we'll be funded the appropriate amount. The check was sent with the
application to Rich Kolker who is collecting them.
