KSC Space Shuttle Processing Status Report
-----------------------------------------------------------------
STS-35 -- Columbia (OV 102) - OPF Bay 2
Rollover of the orbiter Columbia from the Orbiter Processing
Facility to the Vehicle Assembly Building is currently assessed
to be no earlier than mid-afternoon today. Crews are raising the
landing gear this morning and positioning the orbiter transporter
under the orbiter for the quarter mile move to the VAB. Final 17-
inch seal installation has been delayed and work will be
performed in the VAB transfer aisle prior to operations to mate
the orbiter with the external tank and solid rocket boosters.
Rollout to pad A is currently targeted for mid-next week.
STS-38 -- Atlantis (OV 104) - Launch Pad 39-A
Hypergolic deservicing of Atlantis' OMS/RCS systems at pad A
has been completed and the pad is open for routine work. Today,
mapping and baggie removal on the liquid hydrogen lines will be
performed and auxiliary power unit number three will be removed
from Atlantis' aft compartment.
Rollback of Atlantis to the VAB is based on Columbia's
readiness for rollout to pad A. Current plans call for Atlantis
to rollback to the VAB August 8 and wait outside high bay 1 until
Columbia rolls past it out of high bay 3 the following day,
August 9. Once Columbia is at pad A, Atlantis will be moved into
bay three for destack operations.
STS-41 -- Discovery (OV 103) - OPF Bay 1
The left hand OMS pod is in place on the orbiter and the
attach bolts are being torqued this morning. Integration and
verification tests are in work today on both the left and right
hand pods. The external tank functional test was performed
successfully yesterday and hypergolic operations are scheduled
for Saturday for the installation of APU number two.
In Discovery's payload bay late Tuesday night as work was
underway to close the payload bay doors for tile work, a worker
discovered that the leg of a step down platform was resting
against a portion of freon coolant loop number two, creating a
crimp in the 3/4 inch stainless steal line.
X-rays and mold impressions of the 1/4 inch by 1/4 inch dent
were sent to the Rockwell plant in Downey, Ca., to determine the
exact nature and extent of the crimp. Managers hope to be able to
fly Discovery as is. However, if work is required to repair the
line, it could impact Discovery's rollover date by two to three
days. Rollover to the VAB is currently targeted for August 18.
STS-41 -- ET/SRB - VAB High Bay 1
Lifting of the external tank for mating with the solid
rocket boosters took place yesterday with soft mate occurring at
3:30 p.m.
