[sci.space.shuttle] FTPing GIFS from iris1.ucis.dal.ca.

jjhoxsey@vela.acs.oakland.edu (Skyfire) (07/19/90)

Has anyone else had problems with stripped bits on their GIFs when they
FTP from iris1.ucis.dal.ca? No matter what I set the transfer mode
to, BINARY, IMAGE, ASCII... It comes up corrupt. The picture is very
dark and unrecognizeable. Does anyone know a way around this?

BTW: The reason I'm posting here is because the FTP site was announced
in this newsgroup. So, I'm hoping someone else tried to do what I've
done and got the same results.

Thanks in advance...

To bad these .gifs were not in .tif or .pcx format. You could get an image
enhancer for them.

Maybe a transfer back into .pcx or .tif format and then image enhancement
might do. But what does this??

CAD & Graphics has image enhancers in Computer Shopper (800)288-1611

I would look into it.

Hmm, its a good ider if'n I was a programmer at heart, to make a image
enhancer for the .gif format! (grin) This way one wouldnt have to transfer
the formats to aquire the better image.

The PBM utilities by Jef Poskanzer can convert files to various forms. I
don't think .pcf or .tif are one of the known forms, but it is easy to write
a converter from PBM to your favorite format (assuming, of course, you have
a description of said format).

These should be available from a comp.sources.misc archive site.

Yes. The conversion is not too difficult. I have an AT&T 3B1 executeable
set which can convert .gif format to ppm, pgm, or pbm format. I'm sure
the full set of PBM utilities can get you wherever you need to go. :-)

I can't FTP to this host--I get "Unknown host" errors. Any more info on
the address and how to FTP to it???

Thanks,
