yee@scam.Berkeley.EDU (Peter Yee) (08/28/90)

           KSC SHUTTLE STATUS REPORT - WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 22 1990 11 A.M.

                        STS-35 - COLUMBIA (OV 102) - PAD 39-A

The main engine Flight Readiness Test was conducted yester-
day. During the test, the main fuel valve on engine 2 did not
respond as commanded. It was determined that the valve's actuator
was faulty. It was replaced overnight. Retest of the actuator,
which includes engine valve cycles, is planned today. There were
no problems reported with engines 1 and 3.

Servicing of the Broad Band X-Ray Telescope with argon and
closeouts of the solid rocket boosters are underway today.

Two space suits have been installed in the airlock as a
          routine for in-flight contingency purposes.

Columbia and the Astro-1 payload are scheduled for launch on
Sept. 1. The launch countdown will begin at 1 a.m. EDT Wednesday,
Aug. 29, at the T minus 43 hour mark, leading up to the planned
liftoff at 1:17 a.m. EDT on Saturday, Sept. 1.

                       STS-38 - ATLANTIS (OV 104) - OPF BAY 2

Sniff checks of the freon cooling system revealed that the
flash evaporator system is leaking freon. The system will be
deserviced and the flash evaporator will be replaced. Thrusters
are being checked for moisture. Functional checks of the reaction
control system regulators are continuing. Tiles around the win-
dows are being inspected. Flow checks of the gaseous oxygen flow
          control valves are planned today.

                       STS-41 - DISCOVERY (OV 103) - OPF BAY 1

Preparations to begin cleaning the payload bay are underway
today. Cleaning operations are scheduled to begin late this af-
ternoon. The Shuttle Solar Backscatter Ultraviolet (SSBUV) ex-
periment in the payload bay was cleaned overnight. Tile opera-
tions around the main landing gear doors are continuing. All
areas of the vehicle are being closed out for roll to the VAB,
now targeted for this weekend. The routine rollover review meet-
          ing is planned for Thursday.
