KSC SHUTTLE STATUS REPORT - FRIDAY, SEPT. 7, 1990 12:30 PM STS-35 - COLUMBIA (OV 102) - PAD 39-A Overnight, technicians offloaded oxidizer and fuel from the power reactant storage and distribution system. The pad was reopened for normal work early today. Access to the aft compart- ment is expected by early this evening. Tomorrow, technicians will remove foam from around the liq- uid hydrogen recirculation pump package. Pump removal and re- placement operations are scheduled to begin Sunday. Preparations are underway to open the payload bay doors for access to the Astro payload. Launch of STS-35 is dependent on the successful replacement and retest of the recirculation pump package. A tentative time frame for launch is the week of Sept. 17. STS-41 - DISCOVERY (OV 103) - PAD 39-B Technicians are continuing launch pad validations and the remainder of the Shuttle Interface Test. Preparations are under- way to remove a provisional storage assembly (PSA) from the payload bay. This will allow access to the freon cooling system for troubleshooting of a leak. A pressurization test of the freon system is planned for Sunday. This test is designed to verify structural integrity of the system. A leak was detected in the system after the vehicle was in the vertical positon. A helium signature leak test of the three main engines and main propulsion system is planned for Sunday. The Ulysses payload is scheduled to be installed in the payload bay tomorrow and the interface verification test is planned next week. The Countdown Demonstration Test is planned for Sept. 10-11. The STS-41 flight crew is scheduled to arrive at KSC Sunday at 12:30 p.m. for the test. The simulated countdown will begin Mon- day at 8 a.m. at the T-24 hour mark, and will culminate with a simulated engine cutoff at 11 a.m. Tuesday. STS-38 - ATLANTIS (OV 104) - OPF BAY 2 Operations to remove and replace the flash evaporator are continuing. The freon system has been deserviced and removal of the evaporator is scheduled to begin Sunday. Tile repairs are continuing and thermal control blankets are being installed on the forward bulkhead. Atlantis is being prepared for rollover to the VAB the end of the month.
