          KSC SHUTTLE STATUS REPORT - WEDNESDAY, NOV. 7, 1990 10 A.M.

                        STS-38 - ATLANTIS (OV 104) - PAD 39-A

Work to ready the vehicle for the STS-38 launch is proceed-
ing. Closeouts of the aft compartment are continuing.

The two space suits have been installed in the air lock and
are being checked out. Two suits are routinely flown on board the
orbiter in case of an unplanned space walk during the mission.
Purges of the external tank are in work. Tomorrow, purges of the
fuel cells are planned. Ordnance activities are scheduled to
          begin late Friday night.

Atlantis is scheduled to be launched on Mission STS-38, a
classified Department of Defense flight. A new launch date has
          not yet been set.

                        STS-35 - COLUMBIA (OV 102) - PAD 39-B

Auxiliary power unit number 1 was installed and a hot fire
is planned next week. Installation of APU water valves is con-
          tinuing today.

General purpose computer number 5 was replaced yesterday and
is being retested today. Last week, the computer failed during
          testing.

Columbia and the Astro payload are being prepared for launch
          on Mission STS-35.

                       STS-39 - DISCOVERY (OV 103) - OPF BAY 1

Preparations are underway to perform tests on the right or-
bital maneuvering system (OMS) pod at the Hypergolic Maintenance
Facility. A new test, called a screen test, to check the propel-
lant tanks' internal screen is scheduled next week.

Heat shield removal has begun in preparation for removing
the three main engines on Friday. The engines will be transferred
to the engine shop in the Vehicle Assembly Building for refur-
          bishment.

STS-39 booster stacking operations have begun in the VAB.
Today, the left aft booster is being stacked on the mobile
          launcher platform.

                             ^^

Discovery is being prepared for STS-39? Where did STS-39 come from? In the
launch manifest of January 1990 I see the following flights:

STS Vehicle Payload Launch Date Planned Actual Launch Date
36 Atlantis DOD 90 02 22 90 02 28
31 Discovery HST 90 04 18 90 04 24
35 Columbia ASTRO-1 90 05 09 Early 90 12 ?
38 Atlantis DOD 90 07 09 90 11 15 ?
40 Columbia SLS-1 90 08 29 ?
41 Discovery ULYSSES 90 10 05 90 10 06
37 Atlantis GRO 90 11 01 ?
42 Columbia IML-1 90 12 12 ?
43 Discovery TDRS-E 91 01 31 ?
44 Atlantis DOD 91 03 04 ?

and then continuing up in numerical order.

So, if the Discovery's next mission is STS-39, what is the payload? When
and with what vehicle will STS-43 (TDRS-E) be flown?

Also, will Columbia's next mission after ASTRO-1 be STS-40 (SLS-1) or
STS-42 (IML-1)?

And will Atlantis's next mission after STS-38 (DOD) be STS-37 (GRO) or the
last of the DOD shuttle missions (STS-44)?

And finally, was there a launch manifest released in June 1990? Perhaps
that explains much of this and for some reason I missed it.

   GRO - Gamma Ray Observatory
