KSC SHUTTLE STATUS REPORT - FRIDAY, NOV. 9, 1990 10 A.M. STS-38 - ATLANTIS (OV 104) - PAD 39-A Work to ready the vehicle for the STS-38 launch is proceed- ing. Closeouts of the aft compartment are continuing and are scheduled to be complete Sunday evening. Purges of the fuel cells were completed yesterday. Ordnance activities are scheduled to begin early tomorrow morning. The pad will be closed tomorrow to all non-essential personnel. Tomorrow evening, Atlantis' hypergolic propellant tanks will be pres- surized for flight. Launch of Atlantis and Mission STS-38 on a classified Department of Defense flight remains set for Nov. 15. The launch countdown is set to begin at 10:30 p.m. EST Sunday, Nov. 11. The four-hour launch period begins at 6:30 p.m. EST Thursday, Nov. 15. The crew is scheduled to arrive at KSC at 5 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 13. STS-35 - COLUMBIA (OV 102) - PAD 39-B The Broad Band X-Ray Telescope was serviced with argon yes- terday and the payload bay doors were closed. The orbiter's hydraulic system is being conditioned for the engine flight readiness test tomorrow. This is a thorough test of the engines' electrical systems and valves. A hot fire of auxiliary power unit number 1 is planned Mon- day. Today, technicians will service the APUs with lube oil. APU water valves have been installed and functional tests have been completed. Columbia and the Astro payload are being prepared for launch on Mission STS-35. A launch date will be set at the Flight Readi- ness Review scheduled for Nov. 26-27. STS-39 - DISCOVERY (OV 103) - OPF BAY 1 Engine drying operations are complete and preparations are underway to remove the three SSMEs tomorrow. They will be trans- ferred to the main engine shop in the Vehicle Assembly Building for refurbishment. Freon coolant loop number 1 was deserviced last night and the radiator is scheduled to be removed tonight. Inspections of the payload bay doors are planned after this work. Testing is continuing on the right orbital maneuvering sys- tem (OMS) pod at the Hypergolic Maintenance Facility. A new test, called a screen test, to check the propellant tanks' internal screen is scheduled next week. A dry run of the test was com- pleted yesterday. STS-39 booster stacking operations are continuing in the VAB. The first segment, the left aft booster, has been stacked on the mobile launcher platform. The left aft center segment will be stacked next week.
