i have been informed that a shuttle launch is scheduled for 18 dec 89.
is this true? how does one go about getting nasa permission to view
the launch from some "advantageous" place. given the winter date, what
are the odds that the launch may be rescheduled (due to weather conditions,
etc.)? thanks for your help.

I have Atlantis scheduled to launch on 12 October, and Columbia for some
time in December.

You can write your congressman for VIP tickets, but they tend to go fast. I
got 'em for the first night launch - SPECTACULAR! Haven't been able to snag
them since. Second best place to view a shuttle launch is on a boat in the
Banana River, which runs very close to the launch pad. Security places you
about 3-5 miles away; I honestly wouldn't want to be closer.

Probably not bad; Florida hasn't gotten cold in recent years until
mid-January, and you can bet they will hold true to their no-ice-on-the-pad
policy this time around. I've gone swimming in my pool on Christmas (I live
in Orlando, and can see the launches from the lake I live near) so it's
unlikely to be a major consideration.

Florida residents can call 800/432-2153 for the next-launch information,
straight from NASA. Oddly enough, they're only listing shuttle launches on
it now; the commercial rocket that just went up (yeah!) and previous
non-shuttle launches were not recorded on the service.
