I toured the FAA's Palmdale Traffic Control Center a while ago and asked one
of the controllers on duty what special instructions they followed during
a shuttle landing. He said that nothing extraordinary is really done, given
that by the time the shuttle is low enough for any commercial aircraft to
interfere, it is in the restricted airspace of Edwards AFB anyway. He said
there are sometimes requests by pilots to move closer to the area to try and
get a glimpse, but these requests are denied.
