ENDEAVOUR FUND TO BE USED FOR TEACHER FELLOWSHIPS

During today's rollout ceremony of the new Space Shuttle
orbiter Endeavour, NASA Administrator Richard H. Truly announced
that he has created the NASA Endeavour Teacher Fellowship
Program with the generous and heartfelt gifts donated to NASA by
the public for the replacement orbiter. The program will award
scholarships to American undergraduates studying to be teachers.

During the dedication, Truly told the audience that the
generous contributions - sent as a tribute to and a show of
support for the space program - will be invested in America's
future. Truly said that, "As it worked out, Congress provided
full funding for Endeavour. Therefore, today I wish to announce
our plan to use this money to establish the Endeavour Teacher
Fellowship Program."

Truly went on to say that the program, targeted for
implementa-tion in FY 1993, "will support undergraduate students
in teaching careers in elementary education, mathematics,
science or technology."

Referencing President Bush's education strategy announced
last week, Truly noted that "we expect that future recipients of
Endeavour Fellowships will contribute to our President's and
Governors' new strategy to revitalize America's education system
toward excellence in the year 2000."

"Each time Endeavour flies, people who have given to this
fund should take pride in the fact that they not only helped to
provide this magnificent flying machine but also provided
society with some of its most vital resources -- future
scientists, engineers and technologists, backed up by a
population literate in these subjects."
