[net.unix-wizards] looking for working 4.1a tar

We have the pleasure of running a 4.1a VAX 750 for various historical
reasons (not much longer!), and our system vendor claims that there never
was a 4.1a tar that handled symbolic links.  Is this true?  Did anyone out
there ever fix tar for symbolic links?
