[sci.space.shuttle] STS-40

Hello Everyone. I just have a simple question or two.

I just got back from Hawaii and have heard 0 info re: STS-40. I heard that it
was 'stopped' last week. #1 When did it or when is to going to 'get off the
ground', and my second question, (#2) While on the island of Oahu, I saw two
HUGE radio telescopes, one pointed at the horizion and ther other poined
straight up at a 90 degree angle from the ground...What might they be? They
were heavily guarded etc...

If it was an Air Force installation then that could have been one of
the two mid-pacific tracking stations (the other is on Guam) of their
satellite tracking net. The Hawaiian station uses the radio code "HULA"
and Guam is GUAM (clever, what?). Other stations in the network are at
Vandenburg (COOK, because it's really located in nearby Camp Cook), New
Boston, New Hampshire (BOSS), Thule, Greenland (POGO, named after a cartoon
character because its location used to be classified) and on Victoria Island
in the Indian Ocean (INDI). Since I left the program over 10 years ago I
believe they've added one more in the British Isles somewhere.

OTOH, both Hawaii and Guam have installations by NASA and ComSat Corp, and
the latter would probably guard it's installation at least as tightly as
the Air Force!

#1: The launch for the STS-40/SLS-1 mission has been set for
Saturday, June 1, at 8:00am (EST). The faulty computer
components were replaced, and the SSME temprature sensors
     were checked, replaced, or plugged...

#2: Sounds like NO radio telescope, but rather a military
satellite facility. There is a whole FLEET of 'em
     floatin' around up there...!
