Two questions about INGRES: 1. Help in installing and running INGRES. We are using INGRES on a VAX 11/780 under Berkeley UNIX and have just upgraded from 4.2 BSD UNIX to 4.3 BSD UNIX. We were using version 7.10 of INGRES, as distributed with UNIX, for instructional purposes and were satisfied with the response time. When we installed 4.3 BSD UNIX, we tried to install version 8 of INGRES, but were unsuccessful. We decided to revert to version 7.10 of INGRES under 4.3 BSD UNIX. However, now the response time can be terribly slow. For example, we first recreated the 'demo' database. It then may take 1-2 minutes for the command 'ingres demo' to respond with the usual '*' prompt. It then takes a further 1-2 minutes for the command 'print parts \g' to execute. Curiously, any further simple queries are processed almost immediately. This is all with only one user on the system. Does anyone have advice on what we might do to improve on the response time of version 7.10 of INGRES under 4.3 BSD UNIX? 2. SQL -> QUEL Does anyone know of a translator from SQL to QUEL which could be used for educational purposes (i.e. not necessarily complete and polished, but cheap)?
