[comp.databases] what's out there and how good is it?

net.db.{users,programmers,creators}

here at WJ we desire to integrate a new relational db product into
our AT (A[utomatic] T[est]) system. the system is UNIX 4.2 BSD running
on 32-bit minis. data comes from test programs and is mostly a track
of parts and their test outcomes.(failures, comments ...)
the data set could get rather large.
there's a bit of secondary data kept to enforce data entry integrity.

it is absolutely necessary to code in C to store data and support network
operations. i.e. one or more dbases on 1 host machine , with users on 1 or more
machines hooked by LAN. i am looking for embedded SQL, if possible, because
its familiar. for consideration, db speed can be sacrificed for system size.

conversely, the better the report generation software available
the better, as the end users do most of the report generation and
we (WJ) do mostly system work. to stress a point, our end users are 'users'.

it would be helpful if programs could define relational {sub, super}sets to
work with from the main dbase. (i forget the term for this kind of mapping)

mostly, i'm looking for opinions, because i just got out of school and have
very little exposure to commercial products.

if replies come by e-mail i will collate, compress, cross-reference the data
and create a summary ;i may even post it.

thanx ---
