[comp.databases] Commercialism in comp.databases

berlin@bucsb.bu.edu.UUCP (David K. Fickes) (06/11/87)

My two cents in this matter would have to be based on my experience
with a query of database systems that would port to large numbers of
OS/hardware combinations.

Basically, at this point, I have not received a single EMAIL note or
a followup posting to my query. HOWEVER, I have spoken to several
individuals from various companies, marketing depts. that had received
a copy of my note "from XXXX" (somewhere else in their company usually
"from California"). For the record, THIS IS PERFECT!!!!! I have learned
quite a bit about the various products available AND have also developed
contacts in the marketing departments. I'll admit that a third-person
who has had experience with ALL of the products concerned would be nice,
but the ability to have all this information delivered to me through
a single note has been a terrific device.

On this idea, I do recall speaking with a member of the Interleaf sales
staff on the subject of the Usenet (this was about two years ago). She
basically stated that "our programming department doesn't want us (marketing)
on the net and has tried to avoid hooking us up." It seems that the
software companies that have contacted me operate in a similar fashion.

once again, (to those anonymous forwarders)

THANKS! -dave
