[comp.databases] dbVista vs Informix vs RDM ....

larry@tapa.UUCP (Larry Pajakowski) (11/13/87)

We are trying to select a database/windows environment to replace an ISAM
based application. Under consideration are the likes of dbVista, Informix
ESQL, RDM (more popular in the DEC world) Progress and some others. They
all must run under both DOS and Unix/Xenix.

How would you compare something as diverse as dbVista and Informix which
interface with C with Progress (a 4GL) and RDM (an applications
generator). Schedules are critical and I can't get a feel for which take
more time. For example Progress would take an estimated 12,000 lines of 4GL
while RDM has no procedureal code but might take an estimated 15,000 lines
of supporting Pascal.

Real world experiences would be most enlightening.

We looked at all of the above (except dbVista) as well as Oracle...and
we ended up choosing Unify RDBMS and ACCELL 4GL. If you haven't looked
at Accell, and you have a critical schedule, you're doing yourself and
your company a disservice. The bottom line was this: Unify blows the
doors off ALL the competition that I've seen in any kind of apples-to-apples
benchmark. Accell is a good, solid 4GL environment that let's you produce
extremely high quality applications in a *very* short time.

We have used Unify/Accell at my current job to produce 2 MAJOR applications,
running now at several of our locations -- and it only took 9 weeks to
produce, test, and document both.

As for 12,000 lines of 4GL code --- At my last job I produced a system
that included order processing, inventory, purchasing, and a near
real-time, bar coded, WIP tracking system. The whole thing took about 4000 lines
of Accell and maybe 1200 lines of C code. The ENTIRE PROJECT took
me 4 months, from initial concepts to production code. During that
time I was also acting as site administrator AND the de facto
production control manager.

You can do a LOT with Unify and Accell. Unify and Accell are ported to over
100 machines, including to the DOS environment. If you're anywhere near
Silicon Valley, you're welcome to come and see what we're doing
with it now.
