Hi, all there in Netland This is my first posting to the net, hope this goes well. Furthermore, I never read this newsgroup (in the past), so I beg your pardon when this topic has been covered numerous times. My question is about large databases. In short time I will port a large database from an old long-forgotten(?) and almost never-used OS "RSTS" with a special-written program to handle that database to a MSDOS environment. The database contains 150,000 records, and the problem is that I "heard" that dBaseIII is much too slow on that (on an 4.77 XT with 28ms harddisk). I know that upgrading to an AT (12 MHz) would already make things better and I heard that Paradox (Borland) is faster, but it seems to me that the speed of the harddisk is much of the total speed. Now: -Is it enough to have a faster machine? -Are there other programs, dBase-alikes which are faster? And have these programs interfaces to WordPerfect (4.1)? Are there multiuser versions? (up to three users) -Would a 386-machine be fast enough when three users work with the database at the same time? -Which database-programs work under PCMOS386? (I know dBaseIII does) Please send mail directly. If enough response, I'll summarize for the net. Lennert Blom.
