I am interested in 'generalized' database access tools which function in
heterogeneous hardware/software environments. Ideally, the product should
have the following:
o standard query language (SQL would be OK, too ;-))
o support for a wide variety of communications protocols
(SNA, DECnet, TCP/IP, etc.)
o support for a number of host environments
(including MVS, VM, VMS, UNIX, OS/2)
o extractors for a variety of databases and file structures
(DB2, SQL/DS, Rdb, ORACLE, INGRESS, VSAM, etc.)
o the ability to route and queue requests between networks
If anyone knows of such a beast, I'd like to hear about it. 'Star' products
from the database vendors usually don't qualify, because they assume a
heterogeneous hardware/homogeneous software environment (i.e., the DBMS
must exist on all the hosts). Thanks in advance for any replies.
