We currently have a series of UNIX based applications build using the INGRES EQUEL language. We do NOT use any the INGRES provided frontends in these applications. We are considering rewriting are EQUEL code to ESQL for the reasons of portability. My question is this. Is this worth the effort? In other words, how easy would it be to port an INGRES ESQL based application, with no DBMS frontends (forms), to another DBMS system, for example INFORMIX. I realize that a major advantage of SQL is that once you learn the syntax the syntax should be the same in any DB that supports SQL. But this is not my concern here. At this time I am only interested in how hard would it be to support different DBMS systems for a single application. Any experiences with porting applications between different DBMS systems would be helpful. Tom Mack MIS Programming Group ihnp4!ihlpa!tmack
