[comp.databases] Oracle vs Unify

dag@fciva.FRANKLIN.COM (Daniel A. Graifer) (09/27/88)

Hello out there.

We are trying to move a bunch of database applications out of various
random MS-DOS environments (DBASE, Lotus (?!) Javelin) onto our Prime
EXL316 (AT&T V.3). We are looking primarily at two products, for non-
technical reasons.

Oracle is attractive because we can get a corporate discount
through our parent corporation. It would also be nice, althought not
critical, to be compatible with their developement (They run PCs and
Vaxen under VMS).

One of the larger databases we want to develope has already been done
by a local consulting group for another company that disappeared before
the contract was completed. The 90% they have done looks very good, and
they would sell us source cheaply in order to recoup their loss. It was
done in UNIFY/XCEL which we would buy, and subsequently maintain ourselves.

All of the above are economic reasons to choose one of these two. I don't
feel that the databases we are planning will ever be overwhelmingly large,
so efficiency isn't the primary issue. Our biggest concern is speed of
programming, as our programmer resources are quite limited (1 full time)
and me part time.

I would be interested in any strong impressions anyone has as to the
relative merits of these two products. Send me E-mail, and if I get
requests for summaries I will forward or post as appropriate.

Thanks in advance
	Dan
