[comp.databases] comp.4gl ????

cjh@hpausla.HP.COM (Clifford Heath) (09/26/88)

With all the traffic about 4gl's (especially Informix) recently,
how about creating comp.4gl? I mean, there are now quite a few 4gl's
that don't come from database vendors, so including 4gl talk in
comp.databases is really a bit wrong.

Who knows, perhaps the recent articles could have been relegated
to comp.4gl.bugs.

What do you think? I'm for comp.4gl; I'd use & read it daily.

How about the Informix folk setting up a MAILING list.. and
see where that goes...there are many (if not hundreds) of sites
that have nothing to do with INFORMIX ... can't these Informix
"discussions" be placed on a mailing list??? I'd be happy to
assist in setting one up.. (soon to come an INGRES mail list)
and I'd be more than happy to maintain a list-of-lists of
database related mailing lists that can be periodically posted
or sent out on demand????

 whaddya think?

I'd just as soon keep the talk public. I have found these discussions quite
enlightening, as one shopping around for a 4gl package, and would rather move
the 4gl talk to a new newsgroup than have to subscribe to a mailing list. If
the available lists were regularly posted in comp.databases for the sake of
newcomers, I'd be willing to accept it.

I for one would prefer a comp.databases.4gl newsgroup.

Please post more information on the Ingres mail list. I am sure lots of
folks are interested.

This is true of any product. The news group should contain info about all
database products. If it is about a product for which you have no interest,
then just use the 'n' key to skip over it. I see no reason to not post this
information in the group. I would like to continue things as they are. I do
think that the idea of a comp.4gl would be useful. Someone should start a
discussion about the idea in news.groups.

This should be quite a bit of fun since we couldn't even reach
consensus on what a 4GL is! ;-)

Based on that last debate (please excuse any ignorance on how names
are usually created), my guess would be that `comp.databases.4gl'
would be a better name than `comp.4gl' Otherwise, we might
get postings on SPICE, the various UNIX Shells, etc...

I agree. I LIKE seeing information about ALL of the products. The 'n' key
is there for the stuff I don't like.

I also vote for a comp.4gl group.
