I am not an experienced user of dBaseIII/dbxl, so I need some help with the following problem. I created a small database with a 'memo' field. I wrote some code which does some simple adding, editing and deleting of records using a format file. Well, for weeks everything was ok. Then, one day a user reported that when editing a "memo" field, the machine (a Telex 1280 AT clone) went nuts, the hard disk light blinked for about 20 minutes and then all subsequent operations reported a "disk full" error. When I checked the disk with CHKDSK, sure enough, about 10 megabytes had disappeared. I recovered them, and went back into dbxl and found that there was no way that I could acccess any of the "memo" fields. When adding a record, I can put data into a "memo" field. However, I cannot read or edit the "memo" field of any exisitng record. This is true when I am in the "intro" mode, or at the dbxl prompt or in one of my little programs. Any attempt to access a memo field sets the hard disk to work, doing something strage with all of the disks unallocated sectors. Questions: 1 - What happened? 2 - How do I fix it? 3 - Can I recover the data in my existing .dbt file? 4 - What is the file format of the .dbt file? How does dbxl know what text in the .dbt file corresponds with which record in the database? Please e-mail your replies as I do not normally monitor this newsgroup. Thanks in advance.
