I am looking at moving a large database (10 megabytes) from a 68010 machine to a '386 machine. The driving factor is that maintenance each year is almost the cost of a 386 machine with Unix. What I need to do is convince management that the '386 machine can handle the work load. Management tends to think of may 80x86 machine as a PC that is meant for a single user. If anyone out there is using a '386 machine to run an Informix database that supports 3-4 concurrent users, could you answer some questions? Specifically: (1) How much memory is used for one user? (2) How much for each additional user? (3) How does performance degrade with each additional user (a typical load for this application is one person entering data, a couple using SQL, and another runninig a report)? (4) The current system has a problem that with X number of users the system locks up. Has anyone noticed a problem with excessive swapping or paging or just plain locking the computer up? (5) In general, is the '386 a suitable host for 3-4 concurrent users running a database? Mail replies to me and I will send you a copy if you request or post a summary if there is sufficient interest.
