[comp.databases] E.F. Codd and the Relational Model

bkliewer@iuvax.cs.indiana.edu (Bradley Dyck Kliewer) (11/21/88)

I read that Codd was supposed to publish a new book on the relational
model this Fall, but I can't find anything in Books in Print or
Forthcoming Books in Print. Does anybody know what the status is?

Also, I've seen a very short description of Codd's 12 rules, but there
are a couple which I'm not quite clear on. The article references
Computer World, but gives no issue data. Can anybody give me an issue #,
or another book title which gives a thorough (and accurate) description?

Also, Is Codd on the net?

The Computerworld article in which Codd presented his 12 rules
is titled "Is your DBMS really relational?" and was published in two
parts. The first appeared in a supplement to the October 14, 1985 issue,
pages ID/1-ID/9 and the second appeared in the October 21, 1985 issue,
pages 49-60.

Somebody should send this to Dick Pick of Pick Systems. He
insists up and down that Pick is relational, and he dismisses
as "academic types" those who disagree.

There is an excellent article in the recent (NOV?) issue of Database
Programming & Design which deals with Codd's 12 rules. Very clear &
readable, and even includes some of Codd's thoughts on what the rules
DO NOT say. I recommend both the article and the magazine.

The book is actually listed in Addison-Wesley's catalog. However, when
I called to try to order a copy, they told me that it would not be
available until June.

The two articles appeared in the October 14 and 21, 1985, issues of
Computerworld. You will also find a complete description of them in my
book, Relational Database Management for Microcomputers: Design and
Implementation (Holt, Rinehart & Winston, 1988). If you can lay your
hands on a copy, see Chapter 6.
