The Northern California Unify Users Group has decided to make its mailing
list (actually a distribution mailbox) publicly accessible. Whether or not
you are a member of our group, you can have access to a large number of
individuals with expertise and experience. This mailing list is available
for queries, discussions, and (within reason) other stuff. It is currently
unmoderated, and will remain so until we feel it is necessary to inflict
moderation. If you would like to have your name added to this list, just
reply to this posting (UUG-request@mrspoc). If you would like information
about our group, including membership information, same address.
To post to the mailing list, please send to UUG-dist@mrspoc. Your posting
will be routed without any interference (note caveat above).
For those of you who are not familiar with the goings-on in the Unify
User Group community, there are several groups in the country, two of which
are in California. The pioneer group, NY/NJ, has closed down due to a lack
of support and involvement. We were very sorry to see it go. However, we
have opened our membership to allow people and companies from all over the
world access. We believe that there may be real benefits to people who are
not in our immediate area (and therefore not able to attend our meetings)
in joining our group. Some of the features of our group include:
- Monthly meetings in the San Francisco Bay Area (1st Wednesday of each
month, 7PM). We have been holding meetings in a different location
each quarter since we have a fairly widespread membership in the area
(Sacramento down to the southern San Jose area). For the next three
months, we will be meeting at SLAC (Stanford Linear Accelerator).
- Meetings are open to members and non-members alike.
- Annual dues of $50, pro-rated based on the quarter in which you join.
- Monthly newsletter, including member contributions (both technical and
textual). This is available only to members.
- On-line library, including both text and technical contributions. This
is accessible only to members via UUCP/E-mail.
- Mailing list, accessible to anyone. The membership list is NOT available
outside the group.
Our newsletter is one of the primary values of our group for anyone outside
the area. We feel that it is a good newsletter and getting better. Clearly,
the more members we get, the more submissions we expect to get for the
newsletter and library and the more value they will have.
Effective this month, we have also decided to permit paid advertising in
our newsletter. This includes products, services, training, and recruiting.
Pricing for the advertising will be $50/page, with divisions going down to
the quarter-column (1/8 page) at $6.25. Since our newsletter is currently
only black-and-white and produced by a single individual, any material to
be included will be photocopied into place. If our volume grows sufficiently
to warrant it, we will consider scanning material in (our Editor is using
PageMaker to produce the newsletter on a Mac).
