as the subject line says, i am looking for some advise and this is probably the best place to ask ... i am looking for a good database manager package for use in the development of some software. the primary function of this software is the tracking employee work in an assembly line type environment. this package is being developed for in-house use but the boss will want to market it eventually. the last bit of background is the first target environments are xenix then ms-dos. at first i was considering informix -- there is an add in this month's unix- world magazine with a big discount. it is a nice package but i don't know it that well. the real draw back is the marketing, informix's runtime license around $800 for the '286 xenix and $1200 for the '386 ... of course this hikes up the price of the package (big time). in the past i have worked w/ db_vista -- i would like to avoid writing this whole thing in 'c'. i also don't like the way db_vista key (and data) file balloon!! i have heard great things about progress but i really don't know a lot about other database tools for unix (xenix) and ms-dos. here are my priorities: 1. handle fixed and variable length records. 2. multiple databases open at the same time. 3. cut development time over doing the entire package in 'c', however there must be a 'c' interface!! 4. fast (of course). 5. oltp. 6. no (or nominal) runtime license. 7. allow easy portability between sco xenix ('286/'386) and ms-dos. any praises, gripes, warnings, war stories, etc ... would be appreciated. please respond via e-mail to: "phile@ls.com". -- Phil Eschallier (Preferred E-mail): { root | phile }@LS.COM | Lagniappe Systems or: ...!rutgers!lgnp1!{ root | phile } | 1011 New Hope St. #87c (alternate): phile@PRA.COM | Norristown, PA 19401
