I have been using Oracle 5.1.17 (Developer's copy) for about six months on a Xenix 2.3.1 system. On the one hand, I like Oracle's speed and robustness. But I sure wish there were a friendly report-writer front-end that non-technical users could use for ad-hoc queries and reports. All I have is SQL*PLUS and the RPT report writer. Sure, I can use it to generate canned reports for the folks in the office, but they can't use it. They're used to far better database front-ends, such as XDB or RBASE or dBase. Is there any sql-based, user-friendly report writer for Oracle? And is there a query-by-example front-end anywhere? You get the feeling from Oracle that it was written by a bunch of compu-priests in white coats who want to make sure that non- technical users never get at the data. In other words, it's OLD! If anyone knows of a better solution, please let me know.
