[net.records] Steely Dan without Walter Becker

frc (11/01/82)

Has anybody listened to the new Donald Fagan album?
Fagan and Becker are, of course, Steely Dan.
The new Fagan album sounds a *lot* like something Steely Dan would do.
Does this mean that Becker is nothing more than a
talented studio musician, like the rest used by Steely Dan?
I'd be interested in seeing any other opinions.

By the way, the Fagan album is very good.
As expected, he has a group of great session musicians
playing with him (e.g., Larry Carlton, Brecker brothers,
Steve Kahn, Dean Parks etc.).
Fagan's synthesizer is prominent and excellent.
And as usual, his lyrics are provoking and obscure.
If you like later Steely Dan, you'll like this one.
