[comp.databases] Expansion question

jagodits@orange.ucsb.edu (Thomas Jagodits) (11/25/89)

Considering the following scenario, I would like to know if anyone has
suggestions or experiences with a similar problem.

The Environment: A Chemical company.
Current Hardware: A Minicomputer.
The Software: Consists of several files of chemical formulas, raw-materials,
customers and miscellaneous accounting information. These files are not
interdependent, as for instance a certain chemical formula might be
a product for a specific customer (in this case when you retrieve this formula
you also want to get some information about the customer).

At this point of time the mini reached its limit and respond time is starting
to get slow when demand is heavy.
Naturally, one option would be to upgrade to a mainframe.
Another option would be to change to a local area network using PC's.
Assume that rewriting the software costs the same for either option.

Did anyone have an experience with the second option under similar
circumstances? Any suggestions?

				Thanks in advance,
