[comp.databases] Summary of responses re: distributed databases

resnik@grad1.cis.upenn.edu (11/30/89)

I received a variety of responses to my request for information on the
federated approach to heterogeneous distributed databases. One person
suggested posting the query to other BBSs full of people actually
doing database work on PC's, e.g. Compuserve. (I don't have access to
Compuserve, so I didn't, but if anyone does please let me know how it
turns out!). It was also suggested that I post to comp.infosystems,
but I don't have access to that, either. :-< References amounted
to the following two:

Described as "a good survey article on the federated approach etc.":

   Interoperability of Multiple Autonomous Databases

   UMIACS TR 89-10
   CS TR #2188

"...it has a lot of references to other articles, too."

"Another, though older, yet more accessible:"

Heimbigner, D. and D. McLeod, A Federated Architecture for
Information Management, in ACM Transactions on Office Info. Systems,

Many thanks to those who responded!
