[comp.databases] Numbering Scheme info req?

nacer@hpmcaa.mcm.hp.com (Abdenacer Moussaoui) (12/08/89)

Would anyone be kind to provide good sources (books, articles,
papers...) for how one should approach the problem of designing a
numbering or identification scheme say for a small church library
system (15,000 books). I am interested if it would discuss the
benefits and drawbacks of several techniques regarding flexibility,
uniqueness, readability, compactness, popularity of these
serialization schemes.

Best regards. Abdenacer Moussaoui.

PS. I would like to avoid any (too much) theory stuff :-) thanks.

I would suggest visiting the local library and seeing how they track their
stacks. Either the Dewey Decimal system or the Library or Congress numbering
scheme should serve your purposes. The Lib. of Cong. system numbers generally
show up on most books that one encounters, so it may be a favorable way to
number/track your books, so you may want to look at that first.
