[comp.databases] Database Manager needed.

brian@ms.uky.edu (Brian Sturgill) (12/18/89)

(Please ignore the fact that the posting came from Kentucky, but
that I am in Utah, our nntp server machines was temporarily down,
and I was in a hurry, so I used my account at UK to post it.)

We would like to get a database manager for instructional and
departmental administrative use.

Requirements:

The number of simultaneous users will be small (< 10).
However, we would like to access the database from any (> 50) of
our unix systems. Therefore, we do not want a per cpu license.
(Unless of course it is cheap.)
It is ok, if only one system contains the actual data, but
other systems can access it through internet daemons or NFS.
(We also might consider trying for campus-wide licensing, though
it would be a long shot).

The data base should run on the following configurations, listed
	in the order of preference:

4.3BSD on HP 300 based machines.
	SunOS 4.0 on sun3's.
	SunOS 4.0 on sun4's.
	4.3BSD on DEC Vax machines.
HPUX on HP 800 based machines.
4.3BSD on HP 800 based machines.

The database manager should be relational. SQL and easy to use screen-based
queries, would be nice.

If the same manager is also available for Machintoshes, some people here
might be willing to start a cult.

If you know of a database manager that meets many of the above requirements,
please drop a note to "brian@cs.utah.edu".
If the database manager is public-domain or inexpensive, the requirements
it must meet, lessen.

If you're a vendor, and want to avoid phone tag, I will be available Monday
and Tuesday 1-3pm MST, I am also often at my desk most afternoon's.
It would be nice to know initial information by the 22'st.
My phone number is (801) 581-6678.
