[comp.databases] Data dictionary info?

csosnu@uta.fi (Ossi Numminen) (01/16/90)

Dear Comp.databasers,

Has anybody used VAX's CDD/Plus data dictionary system.
I'm interested in any comments and opinions, warnings and
what so ever concerning that product.

Specificially, I'll appreciate answers to the following
questions:

1. Is it really a data dictionary system in the traditional
sense? How does it obey the ANSI/ISO IRDS standards?

2. Is it so called passive (say, it is only used as a
reference source) or active ( it is, for example,
automatically self-maintained by a variety of interfaces
to other pieces of software)?

3. Is it an integrated system (meaning, for example, that
it uses a DBMS to implement the dictionary database) or a
stand-alone system (use operating system files or some kind
of a DBMS of its own to manage the dictionary database)?

4. Is it possible to interface or integrate it to other
pieces of software and the like, like systems design methods,
programming tools and so forth? Can 4th gen systems obtain
data descriptions they need directly from the dictionary?

5. How about the various aspects of integration with CASE tools?

6. Is it extensible, or more clearly, can the data structure of
the dictionary to be tailored to suit your own requirements?

7. Does it have menu driven interface?

8. Do you have anything else in your mind?

It would propably be better to answer via mail. My addresses are
on@utacs.uta.fi (Internet), csosnu@kielo.uucp and on@utacs.uucp (UUCP).

Thanks already in advance,

                          Ossi Numminen
