Many thanks to all who have posted in response to my question regarding open client/server interfaces and potential standards. The answers have been very helpful. It seems that the ISO RDA and SQL Access group standards are the answer to my question. A standard, as we all know, is useful only if it is used; I understand that INGRES and Informix utilize the ISO RDA protocol to the extent that it is defined. INGRES has what it calls a Global Communication Arch- tecture which is a protocol that is based on ISO RDA and the SQL Access group's work. Does anyone know what Informix or Oracle has done to implement the standard in their products? Furthermore, does anyone know how the other firms feel about a connection based communication standard such as the ISO RDA versus the RPC mechanism that they currently use (ie Sybase, Unify)? Would anyone from the other firms care to comment on why they are not implementing a connection oriented protocol? What is the advantage to using RPC? Let the Flames Fly...
