[comp.databases] MUMPS to ?

     Here's a MUMPS to ? question.  I recently inherited a VAX 6310 running VMS
v 5.1, 200 users and a 20 year old Diabetes Registry with thousands of
patients, multiple records/patient, and a thousand variables, written in 
MUMPS.  The system is antiquated, cumbersome, rigid and user-hostile.  I want
to transfer the data into RDB, INGRES or SYBASE.  Of course, the big problem is
transferring data from a heirarchical model to a relational one.  The restric-
tions:
   1)  SQL.
   2)  Ease of use by non-programmers.
   3)  SAS interface.
   4)  Portability.
   5)  Ability to link with things like BMDP, RS1 Lotus, etc., if possible.

   Any suggestions, comments, etc.?
