[comp.databases] Benchmark of informix, ingres and oracle

nigelc@cognos.UUCP (Nigel Campbell) (04/05/90)

I replied to an old msg asking for any comparisons done on
the above database management systems ... not the tools that
   they are supplied with .

An interesting set of tests were done in 87 so they are dated
   by Palmer and Assoc (404) 476 - 4482 . They performed 22 queries
with 5 different conditions on indices over the tables as well as
the time to load/unload tables from external files eg. Vax/Rms .
The platform was an IBM/PC (no idea why) .

   Test types

   Single/Multi table selects , Aggregation , Updates (inserts,deletes
   and updates )

All queries were done through precompiled C/Sql and they made *NO*
attempt to tune the database rather they looked at how good/bad a
job the optimiser made . They also varied a select dml to see how
this would fool the various optimisers .

For anyone who wishes to choose a DBMS this may be a good set of
   guidelines for a benchmark .
