We are using Oracle version 6.0 on a Sun server running SunOS 4.0.3. During system shutdown, Oracle must be stopped in an orderly manner, and the preferred method would be to have a shell script run which would do the Oracle shutdown. But the SunOS shutdown program (binary executable) does not allow for a script to be called prior to the system going down. This makes it hard to have Oracle shut down automatically. One alternative is to have the os shutdown be initiated by a script, which would shut the DBMS down, and then invoke the shutdown program, but this is not secure, since the shutdown script would need the setuid bit set so that operators can shutdown for backups. We are looking at purchasing SunOS source code, but this is expensive. I am looking for advice. Is there a SunOS feature we are missing? How are other sites using Oracle on Sun handling database shutdown? Thanks for any help. Ed Kizys uucp: ...!{cwjcc,pyramid,decvax,uunet}!abvax!eik Internet: eik@abvax.icd.ab.com
