Is there a bibliographic reference system available for UNIX that is: 1) free 2) portable 3) likely to supported for a long time (at least the data files) ?? The reason I am crossposting in gnu.emacs is that my "ideal" system would be released in the "FSF/GNU" spirit and perhaps even have an emacs interface/mode. I am about to create a bibliographic database that I will add to over my whole career. Who knows what machines I'll be working on over the next 30+ years...that's why portability of data is important. I'd also like to easily share it with colleages. Working in the academic environment makes "freeness" important... I am nominally aware of bibtex...do I need a full TeX system to use it? Does it satisfy the needs above? Thanks in advance for any help or pointers to help, mark -- Mark S.
