An INGRES 5.0 application running on the Sun needs to be ported to an IBM RS 4000 running INGRES 6.2? Does anyone have experience with a conversion of this nature? Any comments/suggestions are welcome. E.G.Nadhan egn@i88.isc.com OR {amdahl|att|cbosgd|spl1|sun|uwmcsd1|yclept|nucsrl} !laidbak!egn

There may be two different issues there. The conversion of the application may be relatively straight-forward, depending on a couple of things. A second issues may be the conversion of the data base proper. Converting the data base requires some resources. I've heard figures ranging from twice to 5 times the disk space required by the original data base may be needed during the conversion. Converting the application(s) involves several areas of concern. Ingres 6.x adds new key words. These must be located and purged from the application. There may also be OS specific operations used in the software. These are often much more difficult to locate and change, depending on the host language. Some things seem to convert easily and quickly because of the degree of standardization in the host language. We had a COBOL system we moved from IBM VM/CMS to VAX VMS that went smoother than anyone expected in the Ingres and COBOL segments. (Batch and command files are another story entirely!!!) There is a utility on the IUA Bulletin board that can help locate 6.x keywords. It was presented at the Salt Lake IUA meeting last May. Check with folks in your local IUA or sales office. Somebody near you may have a copy. ############################################################################# ! Bruce E.
